Why two standing desks at the same price can feel very different

Two desks can look almost identical in a photo. Same shape, same tabletop, similar price. Then you use them for a week and the difference becomes obvious. One feels steady when you lean on it while standing. The other moves when you type. One rises smoothly during a video call. The other is slow enough that you stop bothering to change position at all.

Height adjustment range: will the desk fit your body?

Height adjustment range is the lowest and highest working height a desk can reach. The customisable ErgoWorks Signature Standing Desk is listed at 600mm to 1250mm. Check this first, because a desk that cannot reach your correct heights cannot be corrected after delivery.

To find the range you need, stand up straight with your shoulders relaxed, then bend your elbows to 90 degrees. Measure floor to elbow. That is roughly your standing desk height. Repeat it seated in your usual chair for your sitting height. Your desk range needs to contain both numbers comfortably.

Two groups get caught out most often. Taller users find a desk that tops out too low forces them to look down all day. Shorter users, and children sharing a study setup, find the lowest setting is still too high, which lifts the shoulders and tires the arms.

One honest caveat: stage count is not the whole stability story. Frame geometry, tabletop size, floor level, where the load sits and the working height all affect how much a desk moves. Stage count tells you about range with confidence, and about steadiness only as a general tendency.

So test it. Raise the desk to your own standing height, put your hands where you actually type, and lean on it the way you would during a working day.

Load capacity: what a 130kg rating means

Load capacity is the maximum evenly distributed weight the frame is rated to lift. ErgoWorks frames are rated from 130kg to 260kg across the range, depending on configuration and the working environment they are built for. Both the customisable Signature and the ready-stock Lite are rated 130kg.

Read the number as a design statement rather than a breaking point. It tells you what the complete system is rated to lift under the stated conditions. It does not, on its own, prove steel thickness or long-term durability, which need construction detail or hands-on assessment.

When you add up your own load, count everything the frame carries:

• Monitors, and the monitor arm or riser holding them
• A desktop tower, especially in an under-desk holder
• Laptop, dock, external drives and speakers
• Books, files and anything stored on the tabletop
• Normal downward pressure when you lean on the desk

Do not sit or climb on a standing desk. The rating covers equipment, not body weight, unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

Load ratings assume even distribution — weight spread across the tabletop rather than concentrated in one corner. A 130kg rating is not permission to put 130kg on one end.

Lifting speed: how fast should a standing desk move?

Lifting speed is how quickly a desk changes height, written in millimetres per second. Across the ErgoWorks range, elevation speed reaches up to 60mm/s depending on configuration. The customisable Signature Standing Desk is listed at 50mm/s. Across its full 600mm to 1250mm range, that is a complete sitting-to-standing change in about 13 seconds.

The reason this matters is behavioural rather than technical. If you change position once an hour across a working day, that is around 20 adjustments. A slow desk adds friction to each one, and friction is how a height-adjustable desk quietly turns into a fixed desk. The desk you actually raise is the one that helps you.

Noise works the same way. If raising the desk interrupts a call, you will wait until the call ends, and often you will forget. Anti-collision and overload protection: what stops the desk?

The two features guard different things. Anti-collision protects whatever is in the desk's path. Overload protection protects the motor system itself.

The situations this protects against are ordinary ones. A chair armrest left under the tabletop. A drawer unit that has drifted forward. A window sill or shelf above the desk. A child or a pet underneath it.

The published specification does not state the detection threshold or response distance, and anti-collision systems do not all behave the same way. Ask showroom staff to demonstrate it so you can see how quickly it reacts.

Duty cycle: the specification almost nobody checks

Duty cycle is how long a desk's motors run continuously before they need to rest. The customisable ErgoWorks Signature Standing Desk lists three minutes of continuous operation followed by 18 minutes of rest, which covers normal daily sit-stand use comfortably.

A full movement across the range takes about 13 seconds, so three minutes of continuous running covers roughly a dozen adjustments back to back. The specification exists mainly to protect the motors from being run without pause for long periods, which is not how a desk is used in practice.

It is worth knowing about for one reason: if a supplier does not publish a duty cycle at all, you have no idea what the motor system was designed to handle.

The control panel: presets, charging and the Health Coach

The practical value is fit. A 1400mm by 700mm desk in a room that takes 1500mm wastes usable surface; a 1500mm desk in a room that takes 1400mm cannot be installed at all. Waterproofing, termite resistance and formaldehyde-free construction each matter for a specific reason in a Malaysian home:

• Waterproof matters because the common way a desk surface fails is water reaching the core through an edge or a screw hole, then swelling.
• Anti-termite matters in Malaysian homes and older shoplots more than it does in most countries, which is why overseas buying guides rarely mention it.
• Formaldehyde-free matters for indoor air quality, particularly in a small home office or a child's study room. If you need a specific emissions standard for a tender or a school, ask which material declaration supports the claim.

Warranty: check the exact model, not the headline number

Standing desk warranties should be read by model and by component, never by the largest number on the page. Two ErgoWorks desks that share a product family carry very different cover.

Three things are worth checking on any desk warranty:

1. Length by component. The frame and the motor system are different parts with different failure patterns, and they are often covered for different periods.
2. On-site or return to base. An on-site warranty means a technician comes to the desk. Returning a full desk frame is not a small task.
3. What is excluded. Normal wear and tear, misuse, incorrect cleaning and purchases through unauthorised channels are commonly excluded, and buying through an authorised channel is what keeps local support available.

A note on standing desks and health
